Sakura Mochi (Japanese cherry blossom sticky rice cake)
Looks pretty, tastes sweet and chewy with a lovely scent of cherry blossoms.
The pink outside is Domyojiko (glutinous rice flour). The color signifies the flower of cherry blossoms. And the green leaf is pickled cherry blossom leaves.
That’s why it’s called “Sakura Mochi”. Sakura is a Japanese word for cherry blossom. Mochi is rice cake. The sweetness comes from the red bean paste filling.
It’s still snowing in many areas. But in Tokyo, already spring is in the air. And many Japanese can’t wait the blooming of cherry blossoms, although it’s expected a month later.
Sakura Mochi is one of the traditional sweets for the Doll’s Festival, which is on the 3rd of March. It’s called “Hinamatsuri” in Japanese.
It’s the day to celebrate the health and happiness of girls. A similar day for boys is set on the 5th of May.
We see many sweets in the city associated with the day already in February. And of course, we start enjoying them almost!
